Tips to Keep Your Pets Calm During 4th of July Fireworks

We wait all year for the highlight of the summer, the 4th of July. The beach cookouts, parties, hot dogs, cold beers, and of course, the fireworks. While we may enjoy this experience, it can create a lot of anxiety for our furry friends.

Dogs can't understand that these are fun and harmless. The loud and unpredictable sounds of fireworks make them think there's a threat, and they tend to want to hide.

Although we can't stop everyone from shooting off fireworks on the 4th of July, there are ways to keep your pets calm during the holiday.

Give Them CBD

Cannabinoid, or better known as CBD, is found in the marijuana plant. It's the compound that promotes relaxation and has many health benefits. When CBD is extracted from the plant, you won't become high because that feeling comes from the other part, compound tetrahydrocannabinol or THC.

CBD products have been proven to reduce symptoms of anxiety in humans, and the same is true in animals. CBD oil for your dog can help and safely be used when fireworks shoot off at night to keep them calm.

Create a Safe Place

If you know that you or your neighbors are going to have fireworks, you can create a safe place for them. Think about a place where the least amount of noise can come through. This is often a basement or closet.

Fill the room with your pup's bed, blankets, favorite toys, and an article of clothing that's yours. Make sure there isn't anything of value that your dog might ruin. It's common when dogs are anxious that they start to rip things up.

Chewing can relieve frustration or mild anxiety. Be kind to your pet if they do damage something. The last thing your dog needs is to be yelled at when you come home, after being scared to death from the fireworks all night.

Wear Them Out Before

Before you go out to enjoy the 4th of July festivities, take your dog on a long walk or run. This activity will exert any extra energy your pup has.

When your dog is exhausted, they'll sleep deeply. If they're drained, they may sleep right through the fireworks and remain calm. They won't have much energy to be stressed out.

Put on an Anxiety Vest

Investing in an anxiety vest for your furry friend can help them in stressful situations, especially when the fireworks season comes around. The vests are tightly fitted to simulate being swaddled.

When you can't be home to cuddle them yourself, these vests can reduce some of the stress your dog will experience.

Stay Home With Them

For many of us, our dogs are like children, and the thought of them being in distress makes us sick. As much fun as the 4th of July parties are, once the sun goes down, it's better to head home to take care of your pup.

While the fireworks go off, you can stay there and cuddle with them. You're their favorite person, so being by their side will help them a lot. Pet them, give them treats, and talk to them in a calming voice.

The Bottom Line

Fireworks are synonymous with the 4th of July. There's no way that they won't be used on this summer holiday. For us, they're fun, but for our dogs, it's a nightmare.

As pet owners, we can be proactive to help calm our furry friends. Some ways to do this are giving them CBD oil, creating a safe place for them, wearing them out, giving them an anxiety vest, or best of all, stay home and comfort them.
