The Best Hemp Strains of 2018

December 02, 2018

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the second most abundant cannabinoid found in cannabis, right after Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

When compared to THC, CBD is the more laid-back and adaptable cousin. While THC offers all the intoxicating effects that cannabis is generally known for, CBD is mild and non-psychoactive, but still packed full of some of the best medical benefits nature has to offer. It’s a wonderful option for people who want to treat ailments such as pain, nausea, anxiety, muscle spasms and epilepsy, PTSD, and more. Hemp strains have been notoriously difficult to find, but in recent years they’re becoming more prominent in local dispensaries, especially in Colorado where popular hemp strains can reach CBD levels of up to 15 percent.

My favorites hemp strains

Cherry

Cherry averages about 13 percent CBD, although it can fluctuate a bit (at the image above you can see a 20% Cherry flower, currently featured in the Recreational CBD Weekly Newsletter). It grows best indoors and flowers about 8 weeks after sprouting. There are a few different variations of the cherry strain with the most popular type being the Chardonnay selection. At first, the THC content was low but still slightly above the level of detection. After years of careful breeding, it regularly tests under 0.3 percent.

Baox

Baox – also referred to as Deep Forest – is known not only for its CBD content (which averages about 12 percent) but also for its noticeable earthy, pine flavor. Hemp strains are said to be fairly inconsistent when it comes to flavor and appearance, but that is definitely not the case when it comes to Baox.

Charlotte’s Web

Charlotte’s web is one of the oldest and most popular hemp strains on the market today. It was initially cultivated by well-known cannabis breeders from Colorado, the Stanley Brothers, for a young patient named Charlotte who suffered from a rare form of epilepsy. Due to it’s proven effectiveness, Charlotte’s Web has become one of the easiest hemp strains to find for purchase.

Otto II

Otto II was created by Centennial Seeds and it’s actually a hybrid breed with an even ratio of 1:1 for CBD and THC. It usually has about 8 to 10 percent of both cannabinoids. This strain is primarily used to treat inflammation, arthritis, pain, migraines, and cramps. Due to it’s higher than normal levels for THC (for a hemp strain that is) it can produce some mild psychoactive effects.

Have you tried any of these strains before? What about some of your favorites that we may have missed? Let us know in the comment section below!

Owning Guns is a Constitutional Right, Unless You’re a Cannabis User

September 28, 2022

Take two of the most hot-button, tendentious issues of our time – cannabis use and gun rights – combine them, and now we really have a debate. As the law currently stands, medical cannabis patients are not afforded their 2nd amendment right to bear arms. Technically, all cannabis consumers are banned from buying guns, but only medical […]

Cannabis policy changes in Africa are welcome. But small producers are the losers by Clemence Rusenga

Cannabis is a drug crop with a long history in Africa. Alongside coca and opium poppy, it has been subjected to international control for nearly a century. The International Opium Convention of 1925 institutionalised the international control system and extended the scope of control to cannabis. In 1961 a new international convention was adopted to […]

University of Sydney to Offer Free Cannabis Testing by Johnny Green

The University of Sydney is launching a fairly robust study in an attempt to, as the university describes it, “investigate cannabis consumption, behaviours, and attitudes among users.” Part of the study involves offering free, anonymous cannabis testing for people that cultivate their own cannabis in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Cannabis was decriminalized in 2020 in the […]
