Medical Cannabis And ‘Moobs’: Is There A Connection?

January 31, 2018

The last thing most men want to see is cannabis and ‘man boobs’ (or ‘moobs’) in the same vicinity, let alone the same sentence!

However, you’ll have to read through to end of this article if you want to know whether there is any validity to this claim… The technical term for ‘moobs’ is ‘Gynecomastia,’ and is closely related to hormone levels within the male species.

Little-did-most-people-know but approximately 33% to 41% of men between the ages of 25 and 45 are affected by the condition at some point. It occurs a fair amount during puberty, and also in men aged 50 and over. In 2012 alone, 23,000 people underwent surgery to get rid of their ‘moobs’ and the procedure was the fifth-most common cosmetic surgery for men in that year.

While the condition is a joke to some, it is no laughing matter for others and causes untold embarrassment for many men. It’s caused primarily by a hormone imbalance between testosterone and estrogen, which works on a very delicate balance. If and when that balance is changed, for a variety of reasons, the problems start, when the body responds by creating excessive breast tissue.

Now here’s for the even worse news; Some animal experiments have led some researchers to conclude that exposure to cannabis could result in a decrease in testosterone levels, a reduction of testicular size, and abnormalities in the form and function of sperm.

Now for some better news; While these results were noted in some animal species, they were not in humans. Some studies suggest a drop in testosterone for men who take cannabis regularly, while an equal amount of studies on the other side refute that very claim, with some even suggesting that cannabis increases testosterone.

A report from back in 1972 initially made the precarious connection between cannabis and gynecomastia. Then in 1977, a study was published which showed no connection at all between the two. That study can be viewed HERE.

With cannabis becoming increasingly legal across the world for medical purposes, many new research opportunities are opening up, paving the way for a much deeper and coherent understanding about cannabis and its numerous uses in treating medical conditions.

Drug Myths: Does Sugar Stop Your High?

August 13, 2022

There are many myths surrounding recreational highs. However, there are probably just as many truths.
