How CBD Is Revolutionizing Skin Care

February 22, 2019

In the past twelve months there have been a lot of claims made about CBD oil and how it is revolutionizing skin care as we know it. Although it’s true that many of these claims have been been blown way out of proportion, there are several ways that CBD is now being used to treat the skin in new and interesting ways.

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a compound derived from the cannabis plant. It can have a wide range of different benefits for the skin. CBD is packed with fatty acids which make it ideal for restoring life to tired and sagging skin. It’s a powerful antioxidant, which means it can fight off free radicals and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It’s thought to play a role in the production of sebum, which makes it a useful acne treatment. And as an antibacterial, it can tackle bacteria and prevent infections.

These characteristics have helped make CBD beauty products one of biggest trends of the past year. The American skin care industry has very much taken notice of the dermatological research around CBD and its effects, and found innovative ways to take advantage of those effects in their products. Customers too have jumped on the CBD-infused skin care bandwagon and embraced the trend with open arms.

But is CBD really revolutionizing skin care? Maybe that’s a bit much, but it is changing the way people treat some of the trickiest skin conditions.

CBD Topicals Are Being Used to Treat Eczema

Eczema patients have always struggled to find skin care products that would work for them. Not only are they on the lookout for products which don’t cause their condition to flare up, but most are also hoping to find something that might go a step further and actually reduce their symptoms.

Many eczema patients rely heavily on antihistamine medications to achieve this goal, which can be an effective but problematic solution. Antihistamines can have a range of side effects, including severe drowsiness, that many people want to avoid.

CBD topical lotions are now being used to treated eczema instead. Applied topically, the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of CBD-infused products make them an ideal solution to the symptoms of the condition. Even more beneficial is the fact that it has been found to have no side effects when used topically. The best part? CBD topicals are very well tolerated by all skin types.

This new eczema treatment method is giving the 35 million Americans who suffer from the condition an opportunity to relieve their symptoms without the risk of adverse reactions that often come with traditional pharmaceuticals.

CBD Could Help Remove Scars
Scar removal is an area of dermatology which is constantly embracing the most cutting-edge techniques. Scar removal clinics attract new customers by offering everything from laser surgery treatments to chemical peels. While the effectiveness of these techniques can be quite good (with some notable, and highly visible, exceptions) they also tend to be very invasive and risky procedures.

However, CBD is now being promoted as a scar removal aid by some skin care companies and experts. Researchers have found that CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which regulates the health and wellness of the skin, among other things. Through this interaction, the endocannabinoid system could boost collagen levels, which can help to even out the texture of some kinds of scars, such as concave scars.

Here it’s important to mention that scientific studies have yet to provide concrete evidence that CBD itself can directly stimulate collagen production. Still, many skin care experts are optimistic that CBD treatments could provide an alternative, non-invasive option for patients who prefer to avoid the risk of traditional scar removal techniques.
