Quick Background on Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States that was designated to mourn the U.S. military personnel who were lost during service. It was formerly observed on May 30 from 1868 to 1970, then from that point forward was observed on the last Monday of every May.

A lot of people spend Memorial Day visiting cemeteries to honor their loved ones who died while serving. Additionally, many volunteers will place American Flags on the graves of military personnel at national cemeteries. Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial beginning of summer in the United States.

Much like similar holidays that have significant historical and cultural meaning, Memorial Day has been very much commercialized over the last few decades. Now, the bulk of Memorial Day celebrations consist of cookout-style gatherings and shopping for deals.

Sales Peak on Friday

This is a common trend across the board, possibly because a lot of people in the US get paid on Fridays, but according to BDSA’s report, Friday saw the most cannabis sales during the three-day weekend. Thursday and Saturday trailed closely after. In previous years, inhalable products like flower and vape were the most sought after products, so we’ll see if the trend continues this year.

It makes sense, because Memorial Day is a social holiday like the Fourth of July, so people get together, grill out, and spend time outside. In the report, the BDSA claims that “50% of people consume for daytime festivities”. Edibles are also a popular option, as are cannabis-infused beverages and

Many predicted cannabis beverages to surge in popularity in 2021. Edibles are already taking the industry by storm. Cannabis data analytics company, Headset, recently reported edibles grew by 60% across seven legal markets in the United States. This includes market share, according to Headset data analyst Cooper Ashley, who said they increased from 10.65% in 2019 to 11.07% of the market share in 2020.

Cannabis policy changes in Africa are welcome. But small producers are the losers by Clemence Rusenga

Cannabis is a drug crop with a long history in Africa. Alongside coca and opium poppy, it has been subjected to international control for nearly a century. The International Opium Convention of 1925 institutionalised the international control system and extended the scope of control to cannabis. In 1961 a new international convention was adopted to […]

University of Sydney to Offer Free Cannabis Testing by Johnny Green

The University of Sydney is launching a fairly robust study in an attempt to, as the university describes it, “investigate cannabis consumption, behaviours, and attitudes among users.” Part of the study involves offering free, anonymous cannabis testing for people that cultivate their own cannabis in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Cannabis was decriminalized in 2020 in the […]
