Does Cannabis Improve Sexual Function?

February 20, 2019

Recent studies confirm what cannabis users have been claiming for a long time… that it improves sex.

With cannabis becoming a household name and shedding its taboo status, scholars and scientists have been able to conduct more research on this versatile plant. Two recent studies explored the impact that cannabis has on sex.

STUDY 1

A study titled The Association Between Marijuana Use and Sexual Frequency in the United States: A Population-Based Study, which was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, set out to determine whether there was a connection between sexual frequency and rates of cannabis use. They analyzed a CDC survey of 28,176 women and 22,943 men of reproductive-age.

Cannabis has been shown to increase sexual function, especially in women

According to the researchers, “Marijuana use is independently associated with increased sexual frequency and does not appear to impair sexual function.” Daily users actually reported having 20% more sex than their counterparts who have never used cannabis before.

STUDY 2

Another study conducted at Saint Louis University in Missouri, also published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, yielded some interesting results. The study, titled The Relationship Between Marijuana Use Prior to Sex and Sexual Function in Women, focused on cannabis use before sex and how it affects the overall experience.

Initially, 133 sexually-active adult women were surveyed during their annual check-ups at a specific ObGyn office. Later on, researchers expanded their study group to 289 women. Out of these almost 300 women, 65% claimed that it enhanced the quality of their orgasms and the overall experience, 23% felt indifferent about it, and only 3% were displeased with the effects. The main complaint with the sexually dissatisfied group was vaginal dryness after cannabis consumption.

Final Thoughts

All-in-all, these studies are very telling. In the United States alone, 43 percent of women and 31 percent of men report some degree of difficulty when it comes to having sex. Cannabis could be a natural way to resolve some of these dysfunctions and vastly improve relationships between couples.

Cannabis policy changes in Africa are welcome. But small producers are the losers by Clemence Rusenga

Cannabis is a drug crop with a long history in Africa. Alongside coca and opium poppy, it has been subjected to international control for nearly a century. The International Opium Convention of 1925 institutionalised the international control system and extended the scope of control to cannabis. In 1961 a new international convention was adopted to […]

University of Sydney to Offer Free Cannabis Testing by Johnny Green

The University of Sydney is launching a fairly robust study in an attempt to, as the university describes it, “investigate cannabis consumption, behaviours, and attitudes among users.” Part of the study involves offering free, anonymous cannabis testing for people that cultivate their own cannabis in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Cannabis was decriminalized in 2020 in the […]
