Cannabis-Infused Eye Drops May Treat Rare Eye Condition by Johnny Green

One of the most important parts of the human body is the eye. It is always a concerning situation when a person gets something caught between their eyeball and their eyelid, especially when they can’t seem to get it out.

The same is true when a person’s eyelid twitches due to them being tired, stressed, or having too much caffeine. In a vast majority of those cases, the discomfort and irritation goes away fairly quickly.

Unfortunately, some people have to deal with those situations on a frequent basis. It is a rare, bilateral condition known as benign essential blepharospasm.

It is unknown what causes the condition, which results in muscles around the eyes and eyelids spasming uncontrollably.

Eye Drop Research

A team of researchers in Israel recently conducted a clinical trial using cannabis-infused eye drops to see if the delivery method could effectively treat benign essential blepharospasm.

Study participants were randomly separated into a treatment group and a control (placebo) group in equal numbers.

Placebo drops or cannabis-infused drops were administered to the two groups over the course of 12 weeks, with the dosage for the cannabis group being increased for some subjects to increase potential effectiveness.

Medical cannabis can be an effective and safe treatment for BEB as a second line after BTX-A injections when used for three months,” the researchers said. “No significant ocular or systemic side effects were associated with the treatment.”

A Word of Caution

Before deciding to spray your eyeballs with some homemade concoction, it is extremely important to note that this study involved a developed product in a controlled setting.

The successful treatment was not the result of soaking cannabis flower in over-the-counter eye moisturizing liquid and applying it to the eye.

Also, the condition at the heart of this study is very rare. Patients should only put things in their eyes that are approved by a licensed medical professional.

Take two of the most hot-button, tendentious issues of our time – cannabis use and gun rights – combine them, and now we really have a debate. As the law currently stands, medical cannabis patients are not afforded their 2nd amendment right to bear arms. Technically, all cannabis consumers are banned from buying guns, but only medical […]

Cannabis policy changes in Africa are welcome. But small producers are the losers by Clemence Rusenga

Cannabis is a drug crop with a long history in Africa. Alongside coca and opium poppy, it has been subjected to international control for nearly a century. The International Opium Convention of 1925 institutionalised the international control system and extended the scope of control to cannabis. In 1961 a new international convention was adopted to […]

University of Sydney to Offer Free Cannabis Testing by Johnny Green

The University of Sydney is launching a fairly robust study in an attempt to, as the university describes it, “investigate cannabis consumption, behaviours, and attitudes among users.” Part of the study involves offering free, anonymous cannabis testing for people that cultivate their own cannabis in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Cannabis was decriminalized in 2020 in the […]
