Canine Cannabis To Treat Doggy Anxiety Could Be Next

With the current buzz surrounding medical cannabis and its many uses in humans, it seems that animals too could benefit from taking it.

According to new reports, humans are not the only ones who can benefit from the medicinal qualities contained inside the cannabis plant, pets can to. This could be extremely handy, especially if your pup is the anxious type.

If you’re an American reading this, I have three words for you, “4th of July.” This festive event that takes place annually in celebration of the nation’s independence, just so happens to include a lot of fireworks and everyone knows that fireworks are far from being a hound’s best friend.

One Park City-based company, called ‘Healthy Hemp Pet Company’ have been making quality hemp-based products for animals for two years. They make products containing natural hemp oil, which is low in THC, the psychoactive property in cannabis.

Dubbed, “canine cannabis,” “pot for pets,” and even “doggie doobies,” these products don’t make your dog stoned, or high, but can offer some mild anxiety relief, especially where loud fireworks are involved. The products contain less than 0.3 percent of THC, meaning the pup remains cognitive at all times and isn’t at risk for any potentially dangerous side effects.

The company, headed up by Dave Merrell, started when Dave’s own dogs suffered from joint issues from a young age. He wanted to help them, and considered a natural remedy to be preferable to pills. He said that his dog has reacted well to the medication, with no visible side effects.

The guys at Healthy Hemp took out an advert in City Weekly ahead of the upcoming event, with the heading, “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Hempiness,” stating, “More pets are lost on the 4th of July than any other day of the year. This year, soothe your pet’s firework anxiety with CannaNatural. CannaNatural contains PCR-rich hemp oil to help control situational anxiety,” claiming that their products can soothe even the most frightened puppy.

Another example of how cannabis is being used to help doggy anxiety is Brett Hartman from LA, who treats his 6-year-old labrador, Cayley, with a few drops of his own CBD-based tincture.

Hartman told reporters, ”Ever since I started her on CBD (cannabidiol — a marijuana extract), her separation anxiety has disappeared,” he said. Hartman also has an ageing dachshund who takes the drops daily, which allegedly helps her with her arthritis and old age. “CBD has really helped,” claims Hartman.

While neither of the above examples offer any solid proof medically speaking for or against the effect of medical cannabis in dogs, more research needs to be done to establish whether this is the case or not.
